YOU TELL ME TEXAS w/Paul GleiserThe SAVE Act is aptly named on several levels.

The SAVE Act – SAVE being an acronym for “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility” is about to be another dreary example of Republicans failing to do what they were hired to do. The SAVE Act is stuck in the Senate and Senate Majority Leader John Thune says that he’s powerless to get it unstuck. With a hang-dog expression he mumbles about the “math” and the fact that the “votes aren’t there” and about the need to be “clear-eyed” about it all.

OK, how’s this for clear? Most voters – Republicans and Democrats – support the provisions of the SAVE Act. So much so, that the bill could be aptly called the “Common Sense When It Comes to Our Sacred Right to Vote Act.”  That doesn’t lend itself to a handy acronym, but it would constitute truth in labeling.

What Thune apparently fails to understand is that the ‘SAVE’ label could also refer to, “SAVE the Republican majority in Congress,” and “SAVE the country from the ridiculous performance art of Democrats endlessly impeaching Donald Trump if they take over the House in November,” and “SAVE any hope for the GOP keeping the White House in 2028.”

The SAVE Act has five salient provisions. In a nutshell those provisions are a requirement for proof of citizenship to register to vote; standardization of voter registration procedures to help prevent fraudulent registration; a requirement for ID when you show up at the poll; a federal oversight mechanism for state voter registration procedures to ensure compliance; and the mandatory purging of voter rolls to get dead and ineligible voters off the rolls.

Here’s what’s infuriating about Thune’s flaccidity.

The SAVE Act isn’t controversial among the folks. This is one of those rare instances when all of us – Democrats and Republicans – pretty much agree on something. The SAVE Act enjoys upward of 85 percent approval in the polls. And it’s not partisan. Approximately three out of four Democrats support it.

Few of which Democrats are members of the U.S. Senate. Those Democrats are attempting to block it for one simple reason. They don’t like their party’s chances in free, fair, properly run elections. They need the option to cheat if they think an election might be close.

So, memo to John Thune. There’s a reason longtime Senator John Cornyn of Texas is hanging by a thread rather than enjoying safe, comfortable incumbency. There’s a reason that Democrats got more voters to the polls in Texas’s primary election last week than Republicans.

Republicans are fed up with the lack of results that establishment Republicans like you and Cornyn have delivered for too long. Republicans are becoming disheartened.

So, Mr. Thune, quit making excuses, start kicking some butts and get this bill passed. If you can’t pass a bill that is favored by nearly nine out of ten voters, you’re in the wrong line of work.

Pass this bill and you have a shot at prevailing in the midterms. Fumble, which you seem hellbent on doing, and the Democrats take over in November.

I am absolutely sick and tired of the Democrats being successful in painting the Republicans as being “against the wishes of the majority of voters!” That is total BS! They say “polls show ….” and Republicans answer with some crap about how “we are on the side of American voters” and nothing gets done. Both sides have been guilty of being on the wrong side of an argument, but it seems like the current crop of Democrats simply do not care about a good country anymore. Every argument they have can be obliterated in a genuine debate of merit. They only want to be in charge and deny Trump the ability to accomplish his job. You have to provide ID to buy alcohol, send money via internet, rent a car, and any number of other daily tasks. How can showing an ID to vote be racist?

Oh my gosh! Words fail me and if you knew me, that means something indeed. Nothing about this makes any sense except that something is UP!!!!! John Thune is useless. He should be willing to move mountains to get this done faster than ASAP. Yes, hell-bent on getting this passed.
    Am I suspicious – 100%
But, but, but wait. Once again thank the good Lord we still have our “David” to help us slay this enemy. WHEW!
Folks, we owe him so much and only time will give us that sense of gratitude we need to cleave to.
Thank you Mr. President (and John Thune, break a leg!)

    Good analysis 👍🏻

RINOs like Thune, Cornyn and McConnell aren’t in office to serve their constituents, they are there to enrich themselves. Their slime trail is easy to follow, it just takes a little effort on our part. Yet, republican voters keep electing them. Well, you get what you vote for.

It is NOT like the old days where the people running for office really meant something. These people actually, for the most part meant what they ran on. But now those will look you straight in the eye and lie!!! I don’t know much about Thune but boy do I know enough about cornyn and the TURTLE to know I will NOT vote for them. I held my nose and voted for cornyn the last time! But he has lost my vote for good!

Seems like every single time republicans are handed the ball, they fumble. It’s almost like they don’t want to be in charge, they want to follow. Anyone else notice this? Thune could bring back the old filibuster but he’s listening to his deep pocket donors and he must also know that they’re going to get their asses handed to them in November but it doesn’t seem to bother him. Electing Ken Paxton is only a start in fixing this problem but I’m sure I won’t see a cure in my lifetime.

Completely confounds me how Demodemons can totally log jam everything when Republicans are in the majority. Yet when Republicans are in the minority, they cannot do squat about stopping the Dems measures. Dems can push their stuff through
or just break all the rules and do whatever they like a.k.a. wide-open borders, sanctuary cities, and defund the law enforcement community. Again, Republicans act defenseless, whine, and do nothing. Cornyn must go; we need pit bulls in the Republican Party, not lazy lap dogs growing fat on our dime. Great article Paul.

If during a government shutdown there are members of the government workforce that don’t get paid, why do we not figure a way to include the members of Congress CAUSING the catastrophe to be included in the distress? One way to get a democrat to follow you is by waving a dollar under their nose!!

  11. Can copies of Mr. Gleiser’s Featured Articles be sent to individuals like the Senate Majority Leader John Thune? Or, are they copyrighted and cannot be sent w/o Mr. Gleiser’s approval? Does anyone know the answer? Thank you.
