A cautionary tale from our cousins.

Lars Möller is a Danish physician and frequent conservative commentator. He wrote a piece Wednesday at AmericanThinker.com titled, “Britain and the Crisis of National Identity.”
He warns of the growing possibility of societal collapse in England, a nation he describes as,
…one of the world’s oldest nation states, [that] has long stood as a symbol of continuity, tradition and cultural propriety.”
The premise of Möller’s article has at its center the decades during which British governments of all stripes have permitted millions of immigrants to pour into the country without any attempt to assimilate them into British society and culture. That wholesale unassimilated immigration, he says, has acted as a potent and negative catalytic force in the erosion of English cultural heritage, centuries old English institutions, the Anglican Church, Parliament and indeed the English language itself.
England, Möller explains, is becoming less and less English. Currently the center of a United Kingdom that includes Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and once, not so long ago, the seat of one of the mightiest empires in the world, England more and more is an uneasy collection of parallel societies from Africa, South Asia, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe.
“The public square once shaped by Anglican values and Western customs,” Möller writes, “is now defined by religious pluralism, which has disrupted a shared cultural narrative.”
The impact of England upon Western Civilization cannot be overstated. England did much to shape the civilized world as we know it. Anchored in the belief in fundamental human rights as first articulated in Magna Carta, and chastened by the teachings of the Christian faith as promulgated by the Anglican Church, the British Empire exported law, individual property rights, education, functioning government, manners, and civil discourse to the four corners of the world.
One such corner was the North American continent upon which the United States was founded and went on to prosper like no nation before it.
Möeller goes on to lament that English national holidays, monuments, traditions, and institutions that once bound the British people in a shared culture are increasingly held in contempt – even now by native-born Brits.
I hope that by now the hairs are bristling on the back of your neck as you spot some obvious parallels between our nation and that of our English cousins.
Leftist demagoguery notwithstanding, Trump immigration policy is neither racist nor xenophobic. No one in the Trump administration is against immigrants or immigration. The problem for Trump – and those who voted for him based on this issue – is illegal, unassimilated immigration.
To thrive, a society must have a common cultural and moral framework. It cannot long survive as a patchwork of competing identities, cultures, languages, and customs.
The Left celebrates multiculturalism. But the fact is, in the absence of a shared set of core beliefs, multiculturalism fractures societies – a fracturing that is playing out in real time in once stable and stoic England.
And now in Minneapolis.
England is a cautionary tale. We here in America would do well to take heed.
