Echoes of 2003.

Twenty-three years ago today, President George W. Bush believed two things. First, he believed that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was in possession of ‘weapons of mass destruction’ – a.k.a. WMDs. Such would include nuclear, biological and chemical weapons of war. Second, he believed that Iraq represented unfinished business from 1991 when his father was president and launched Operation Desert Storm to get Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait.

Thus believing, W launched Operation Iraqi Freedom. After an initial flush of success, Operation Iraqi Freedom turned into a mishandled occupation and failed attempt at nation building. And no WMDs were ever found. The Iraq War would go on to see George W. Bush leave office with truly dismal poll numbers.

Three weeks ago, Saturday, President Donald Trump believed two things. First, he believed that despite the destruction of Iran’s nuclear facilities last summer, the theocrats running Iran were nevertheless still close to having a deployable nuclear weapon and in any event would never give up their quest for nuclear weapons by which to threaten the Middle East and indeed the entire civilized world.

And second, he believed that with respect to Iran, there was no road left for further can-kicking.

So, he launched Operation Epic Fury.

Like Operation Iraqi Freedom, there has been a quick flush of success. Trump is promising that American air and naval superiority will make short work of the malfeasant Iranian regime. Certainly, it has made short work of the existing leadership. Iran is on its third ayatollah in as many weeks.

Iran is badly crippled. Much of its ballistic missile arsenal has been wiped out. So, too, its navy and many of its top military and government leaders.

But, degraded as the regime is, whoever is in charge is playing an ace in the Strait of Hormuz. Despite being crippled, Iran has brought traffic in that strategic waterway to an effective halt. Fully 20 percent of the world’s fossil-based energy transits the strait, and that energy is now missing from the world supply. The result is, among other things, higher gasoline prices for American consumers, very volatile equity and energy markets, and fears of reignited inflation.

I absolutely support the idea of once and for all ridding the world of the Iranian regime that has held the Middle East and the developed world hostage for nearly a half century. But, as much as I’d like to believe otherwise and for as much as some pundits for whom I have respect disagree with me, I am skeptical of the idea that doing so will be quick and easy. War never is.

Does that mean I believe Trump shouldn’t have done it. No. Or, at least, no, not necessarily.

But it does mean this. We can’t afford another half-assed, half measure stalemate.

I’m afraid of this war dragging on and, among other things, costing the GOP the midterms. But I’m even more afraid of having started it only to politically destroy the Trump presidency while leaving a still dangerous Iran to the next administration.

  1. There are times in history when enormous problems faced countries. There seemed to be little hope until great numbers of people appealed to God in prayer. Our country was built on this foundation. At this time, let’s all continue to ask God’s help and blessings on our leaders and our country.

We, here in the Good Ole USA do a substandard job of teaching history and government of the Bible and world. But, lets focus on North America before we dive off into Iran. America as we know it was conquered by colonist; get over it. Is anyone going to give up their property and treasures to Native Americans? Nope! So move on.
History is ripe with victors, conquerors making the rules. The USA is a Republic; not a democracy. If you do not know this, you have failed in your Civics classes in High School and College. Rome was a Republic, Greece was a Republic before the knuckleheads screwed it up; as we are on the course to doing so with the current crazies called Democrats. Republics are fantastic for their people, until they decide it is not. Toss in religious zealots and you get Iran. Radical Islam is worse than Democratic Socialist or Fascist or Communist. Do Not make the mistake of thinking Iranians are anywhere near Arabs; they will kill you for thinking so; They are Persians. Persians, do have a very long history associated with the Bible and they are anything other than Arabs or anyone else. I knew several Iranians and gave them rides to Junior College. They are honorable people until insulted or deceived. Radical Islam has deceived them and many know this. This war we have embarked on is to change that mentality; albeit the lies of the Democrats, the Democratic Socialist, and Islam communist. President Carter should have taken care of this nonsense but he did not. Presidents Reagan, Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Biden had opportunities but failed to act. Do NOT FORGET THAT. President Trump is putting an end to this history changing group of sadist and madmen. What part of “Death to America” do you not understand? They hate all of us, every man, woman, and child in America. That does not extend to all Iranians. As I said, I gave ride to and from Junior College to several who were good people. They did not subscribe to this radical religious fevor; they only wanted an education and jobs. Such a shame the few screw up the many.

The Democrats don’t need any more reasons to try to impeach Trump or call him an evil dictator. I watched the hearings as they tried to tie Iran up in the same “imminent threat” scandal that sank GB, Jr. But the U.S. has been toying with Iran long enough. Their intentions are clear. They want a nuclear bomb and they are close to having one. We allowed North Korea to build one and we know how that is working out. Communists kill anyone that disagrees with them, regardless of religion or nationality. They can’t be dealt with diplomatically. However, Iran is a religious war that has been going on for centuries and Donald Trump is not going to end it. He may succeed in smoothing things over enough to allow the Middle East to return to some level of normalcy. There will always be the threat of radical ideology in the world, and with everyone always stuck on the Internet it doesn’t take long to get people riled up about a perceived injustice. We as a society have to become more diligent and aware of our surroundings. If you notice someone acting differently then do something. Good can overcome evil through sheer numbers.
