Donald, I am your father.

Let’s be clear from the beginning. I am not in the tank for Donald Trump. I will absolutely vote for him if he is the Republican Party nominee against Hillary Clinton. But the same could be said for Fukadu, the man who owns the 7-11 where I bought my coffee this morning. If he happens to win the Republican nomination, Fukadu – who runs the cleanest, most squared away 7-11 you’ve ever seen – can count on my vote November 8.

Fukadu, however, shouldn’t get the big head. If it’s a choice between a cauliflower and Hillary Clinton, I’m a cauliflower man.

With that out of the way, let’s take a look at Mitt Romney, who lashed out at Donald Trump Thursday.

What comes immediately to mind is, Where was that passion four years ago, Mitt? How come you never managed to lay the wood to Barack Obama the way you did Thursday to Donald Trump? Where was that fiery eloquence against a very beatable opponent in 2012?

A pal of mine texted me yesterday saying, “Best Romney speech I’ve heard. And it’ll probably end up helping Trump.”

I agree that it will help Trump. But I disagree about it being Romney’s best speech. Romney’s best speech was the one he gave late in the evening on that first Tuesday in November when he conceded to Barack Obama. That was a darned good speech. And it continued the proud GOP tradition of being the very best at giving presidential election concession speeches.

Mitt, your god-awful campaign cost you your right to say anything about any other Republican candidate. But for your ineptitude as a candidate, all of us – including Donald Trump – would be calling you Mr. President today. Donald Trump would be supporting your re-election.

It could have happened. I was in the room with you (in fact standing very close, look at the photo above) at the 2012 GOP Convention in Tampa and I said of you at the time, “He’s got a real shot.” That’s something I didn’t say four years earlier about John McCain. (I was in equal proximity to him in St. Paul in 2008. I walked out of that room knowing that he stood no chance.)

When you smoked Obama in the first debate I was convinced that you were going to win. When the third and final debate was set to be on foreign policy in the wake of the Benghazi fiasco, I just knew you had it in the bag.

But on debate night you just stood there looking like Ward Cleaver. Near the end, CNN’s Candy Crowley all but de-pantsed you.

If my TV hadn’t been new at the time, I would have thrown something at it.

Donald Trump would have buried Obama at that debate. That, Mitt, is why he’s resonating with voters and you’re a private citizen. Republican voters are sick of un-kept promises and more than that, they’re sick of losing.

GOP blue bloods like you have a decision to make. Are you really going to stick your thumbs in the eyes of a decisive plurality of Republican voters?

Think about your answer, Mitt. Think about it knowing that you are the reason there is a Donald Trump.

“Promises as worthlus as a degree from Trump university.” Absolutly true and delivered by a very good man who should have been president. Every time I hear
someone rag on Romney for stating the obvious it does give me pause. Wish you had trained your fire on the conman instead.

Where has Mitt been the last 8 years when the republican senators and congressmen have been siding with the democrats and Obama?

If memory serves, Candy Crowley was in the 2nd debate. The 3rd debate was on foreign policy though.
