Something (at last) from the Durham investigation.
If you’ve forgotten – and God knows enough time has passed that you can be forgiven for it – John Durham was appointed Special Counsel in April 2019 by then attorney general William Barr. His task was to investigate the FBI’s activities regarding the Trump “Russia collusion” story.
Nearly two and a half years later, Durham’s investigation has produced something tangible.
Michael Sussman was a lawyer at the high-profile law firm Perkins Coie. During the 2016 election, Perkins Coie represented the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign.
John Durham just indicted Sussman for lying to the FBI. Sussman went to the FBI in 2016 with a story alleging that Donald Trump and the Russian government were communicating through a “secret channel” arranged by a Russian bank. The implication was that Trump was a pawn of the Russians or was in some other way compromised by these secret communications with the Russian government.
According to the 27-page indictment, Sussman knew it was all a crock . His supporting “evidence” was Clinton campaign and DNC oppo research; a.k.a. the infamous “Steele Dossier.” And though he told the FBI that he was acting solely as a concerned citizen, he billed the time he spent talking to the FBI to the Clinton campaign.
Of course, the goal was never to actually prove wrongdoing. Proof would take too long anyway. The goal was simply to trigger an investigation that would derail Trump’s candidacy. And if by some horrible accident Trump won the election anyway, the fallback goal was to hobble his presidency. That goal was achieved via the three-year Mueller investigation.
The media happily played along and top Democrats piled on. Listen to this montage.
This is what now passes for political discourse in America. No longer does Tip O’Neill duke it out with Ronald Reagan in public but then meet over drinks at the White House to come to terms on something that both can live with.
Tip’s political heirs are Democrats for whom debate and compromise are totally passé. Complete annihilation is the only acceptable outcome.
And toward that end, literally nothing is out of bounds.
