Some good comes from everything – even the worst of things.

In support of that assertion, I offer the anti-Jewish, anti-American, pro-idiot protests now happening on elite college campuses such as Columbia University. The good that I see is the growing awareness – particularly among the parents of college-aged kids – that something has gone terribly wrong in American higher education.

It has been a long time coming. Those of us that are old enough remember the campus protests of the 1960s. We have, in a way, come full circle. Columbia University was the site of the first of a series of demonstrations against the Vietnam War on college campuses that began in the spring of 1968.

At Columbia, militant students staged protests that included taking over Hamilton Hall, a building that housed both classrooms and administration offices. Administrators at Columbia were eventually forced to call in the NYPD to restore order. (Give them credit. At least those kids understood what they were protesting.)

The March 1968 Columbia University protest is credited with starting the campus protest movement. It’s also credited by some scholars with pushing American higher education sharply to the left. In his book, The Closing of the American Mind,” University of Chicago professor Allan Bloom said, “American universities were no longer places of intellectual and academic debate, but rather places of ‘political correctness’ and liberalism.”

So, here we are, 56 years later back at Columbia, and that leftward push now has American higher education on the edge of the Marxist abyss. Examples abound. Here’s one.

Thanks to the reporting of Cal Thomas at Townhall.com, we are introduced to Professor Mohamed Abdou, who is described on Columbia’s website as, “…a North African-Egyptian Muslim anarchist interdisciplinary activist-scholar of Indigenous, Black, critical race and Islamic studies, as well as gender, sexuality, abolition and decolonization.”

Said professor Abdou on his social media feed, “Yes, I’m with Hamas and Hezbollah and Islamic jihad.”

(And to think you can get this for your kid for just 90 grand a year.)

The good that comes from this is that even the casual observer can now see the leftist rot in American higher education in its full flower.

That clarity has parents asking very pointed questions about what a lifetime spent saving up is going to pay for at the colleges their sons and daughters want to attend. Wealthy alums are closing their checkbooks. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft is one such alum. He made that announcement this week, saying, “The school I love so much – the one that welcomed me and provided me with so much opportunity – is no longer an institution I recognize.”

It took a long time for the higher education pendulum to swing so far to the left. It will take time for it to swing back. But perhaps that swing has begun. If so, good for Bob Kraft and others like him. And good for the parents who are asking the tough questions. Perhaps we are seeing a long overdue awakening and a critical first step on the long road to restoring sanity to American higher education.

Excellent article, Paul. However, the indoctrination of our children by the people that are supposed to be educating them begins in elementary school. Also, the inability of those in charge to discipline those engaged in disruptive behaviors has led to what we are seeing from society today. An old saying when I was a child was “Spare the rod, spoil the child!” I was not spoiled, either, because I made MANY errors in judgement. I’m seeing a significant portion of the protesters that are clueless about ANYTHING except something being wrong somewhere. The worst part of this is that these are some of the very students that have had, or will have, their college loans forgiven by the country they are protesting against.

Who in their right mind would send their kids to such an institution?
We are asleep at the wheel when it comes to education. It does begin with our local school boards. All of us
must start attending meetings, vote, and express your views. Silence is consent; whether you agree or not. Keeping
your mouth shut and thinking your view does not matter is wrong thinking. Our system of governance was set up
on vigorous debate. The fate of your kids and grandkids depend on it.

The seed of indoctrination which, as Mr. Durham said starts in elementary, is going to be very hard to kill out because it has gone on far longer than it ever should have. People became asleep at the wheel so to speak where their kids education was concerned. Both parents worked and school was looked at as daycare for their kids and little attention was given at WHAT was being taught. We now are reaping what was sowed.
Parents were thinking by sending their kids to college they were doing right by them. Sadly as we have found out far too late this was not the case. It is going to take far longer than we think to undo what was done and I pray that it is not too late. Hopefully more colleges will spring up like Hillsdale to try and bring back faith in our education system.

    Paul,
That was another comment “that’s outta tha park” and pithy. Remember…Rush used the term Femini-Nazi? I think it is on full display and where the girls are, the boys will follow. I am a woman so I can say that. Lol! Young men are not excluded from this malady. Of course emotionally immature college students are impressionable and some are being manipulated by violent and paid organizers. After awhile they could become hardened to any other information. Cut funds to these schools, restore campus order, regular classes, expel dissident students, and prosecute everyone that participates. I will NOT send any donations to the college I attended a long time ago.

Another good that I hope will come from this is the kind of landslide we had in 1976, the last time we had a totally incompetent president.

The Democrats cry about January 6th? Remember 4/30/24 and how it goes down.

EVERYONE on this blog needs to contact their State and Federal Representatives and Senators demanding they immediately stop this nonsense and defund the schools that are allowing it to happen. Staying silent is not an option at this point. For a rare moment Mayor Eric Adams was spot on when he railed against these radicals taking down the American Flag to fly a Palestinian flag on our soil. Flying any other nations flag in support of anything anti-American must be crushed immediately. This kind of terrorism and rioting has got to stop now! I have contacted all of mind to let them know exactly how I view this debacle. YOUR tax dollars are going to educate these people! Columbia received $1.2 billion; yes with a “B”, for student loans, scholarships, etc. for these radicals; Harvard, Yale, Brown, all the others receive millions upon millions as well. YOU really want your tax dollars going to this farce of an education? I sure as hell do not. At a minimum I am going to raise nine kinds of hell at my so called representatives that I help elect. THAT is what Civic’s 101 is all about.
